Watch out as there is a large gap between return trains to Barcelona from Ribes and the rack trains are not timed to connect.

The scenery from the rack railway is spectacular, it really is. On arrival at Nuria I was surprised to find that most things were closed.

It was Wednesday. You can visit the chapel, with an amazing representation of the Virgin and Child without the queues of Montserrat, go to the cafe the main restaurant was closed. The boating lake and crazy golf was not open, nor any of the chairlifts. This can be explained that it is a minor ski resort, but I'm sure a chairlift would be popular in summer - there were a lot of visitors, and golf and boating would not be possible in Winter.

Irrelevant really as it was a great place to be. I passed the time by doing a five mile walk downhill to the next station Queralbs, and catching the train from there.

You can get there on the rack railway, open since , that runs from Ribes de Freser and Quaralbes. There is a lot of interesting information about the history of the place and the natural history of the area. Kids are catered for. At the right time of the year you may see chamois. Just inside the Sanctuary you can put your head inside a large metal pot and have the bell rung above your head. It is supposed to be a miraculous cure for migraine attacks and infertility, although there are more invasive remedies available these days.

There are winter sports such as skiing and ice skating on the lake. You can hire a rowing boat in the summer and hike. Navigation to the top is easy. NB: Only for experienced hill walkers. For the more active I would recommend getting a single ticket to Nuria and walking back down the trail back to Queralbes.

The valley is very narrow so navigation is simple. Anyone who walks back down the Queralbes will be treated to some of the most spectacular scenery imaginable. There are incredible waterfalls. It is absolutely breath-taking. The valley becomes, in places, more of a gorge. Do not attempt it without proper footwear, boots or walking shoes.
